Not a formal software tool, HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) may be hand-written or edited in a text editor such as Notepad (I have long used TextPad) or in a more comprehensive tool such as Dreamweaver.

Flash Banners: Microsoft Windows Live®

Flash Banner "Grand Theft Auto IV"Microsoft has hired me for several 6- to 12-month contracts working on content for Xbox® and Windows Live.® Creating banners in Flash presents several challenges that I enjoy: incorporating good design, keeping the file size low for optimum delivery speed, and ensuring that all motion happens smoothly. Working in Microsoft’s FUSE Design Group, I was given considerable latitude executing these 3 banners. Read more

Flash Banners: Amazon Kindle Fire HD®

Kindle Fire HD®I was on assignment to an agency tasked with creating Flash banners for the upcoming Amazon Kindle Fire HD. My job was to have the banners finalized for release in a couple of days. Meanwhile, Amazon was still reviewing and changing the designs daily. There was no time to use Flash’s traditional timeline-based approach—instead, I programmed all motion and timing modularly, using Adobe Flash ActionScript. Read more

“Marc, your Digital Audio Presentation is phenomenal—you take a highly technical subject and make it understandable to a broad audience. I appreciate your excellent sense of organization, the use of interactive graphics, and your wonderful sense of humor. Thanks for being a regular presenter at our annual nature-recording workshop.”
  —Martyn Stewart, naturesound.org

Digital audio is a topic fraught with mystery, misconceptions, and misused terminology. Because I enjoy the challenge of making abstract concepts intelligible to non-techies, I created a presentation on this subject which I’ve been invited to deliver numerous times. One element of the presentation is the interactive Klezmer Frog Band that allows the user to play sound engineer to a band of amphibian musicians. Read more

When my wife and I moved to Duvall, Washington, we noticed there were not many local venues for live music. We decided to host a series of concerts in our home, where we could feature some of our favorite area musicians in a friendly setting. It’s been a great way to contribute to our community while promoting something dear to us: music.

The DuvallHouseConcerts.com website promotes upcoming concerts, accepts seat reservations, displays photos and videos of past concerts, and includes a contact form.

I write all copy on the website, which we use in conjunction with Facebook announcements, MailChimp emails, and local press releases. Read more

I publish a blog on my photography website, SongbirdPhoto.com. It’s a way to promote and disseminate my work and to help others connect with nature. I usually cross-post a synopsis to Facebook and might post a photo now and then to Pinterest.

Here’s a blog about crows:

“Seattle is a city of crows. And they have a nasty reputation. Folks here know them as picnic terrorists, garden plunderers, and (on garbage-collection days) maniacal strewers of trash. Read more

Audio Loops

Sound loops are typically lighweight audio files that repeat seamlessly to provide a background effect. Creating them poses several challenges:

  • Short loops become monotonous, while long loops take too much time to download
  • Loops should reinforce the message, not distract from it
  • A good loop will have a smooth transition as it repeats Read more
